Bowling Green drivers were in for a treat when they encountered a giant piece of fruit motoring along Nashville Road—a spectacle hard to miss, the Big Banana Car made a much-anticipated visit to Bowling Green.
The man behind this incredible venture is Steve Braithwaite, who owns and drives the Big Banana Car. He has been touring around the nation behind the wheel of this extraordinary vehicle, which very much resembles a giant piece of fruit, for more than ten years now.
“To my knowledge, it’s the only banana car in the world,” Braithwaite stated proudly. “But it’s in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s longest banana.”
Seeing the massive banana on four wheels has reportedly astonished Bowling Green residents. Residents were seen catching rides along Nashville Road in this unique vehicle. “I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is a once-in-a-lifetime-type of thing,'” exclaimed Bowling Green resident Jennifer Dotson, who had the opportunity to ride the Big Banana Car.
The Big Banana Car has been part of several local events and has traveled extensively since it took to the road in 2011. Originally constructed from a 1993 Ford pickup truck, this unique vehicle has drawn interest and awe from people all over America.
Braithwaite had long been interested in constructing a unique car but was unsure how he wanted to design it. But his life changed one day when he found himself studying a banana in a gas station. “I pick it up; I’m studying it, and I’m like, ‘The wheels would go there, the windshield, the bumper, the seats,'” Braithwaite recalled. Instantly, he knew he had found his gem of an idea.
The intriguing concept was brought to life in 2009, when he commenced working on the Big Banana Car. After dedicating long hours, including Sundays and some weekdays to get the job done, the Big Banana Car was finally ready for the road in 2011.
Ever since that startling day in the gas station, Braithwaite and his Big Banana Car have been creating history together, one mile at a time. The Big Banana Car not only serves as a unique means of transport but also helps to spread joy and wonder wherever it travels.
