Bowling Green, KY – Monday marked the commencement of the highly anticipated 2024 Aviation Summer Camp at the Bowling Green Warren County Regional Airport. The camp, which welcomes aviation enthusiasts aged 10 and beyond, is already teeming with students thrilled at the chance to deepen their understanding of the complex world of aviation.
In response to the ever-growing demand, two separate camps have been established. These camps cater to different age groups. The Jim & Jan Bohannon Camp is designed for learners aged between 10 to 17 and is set to run on Monday and Tuesday. Its counterpart, the Bob & Cara Pitchford Camp, is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday and invites students aged 10 and up.
The camp started on a high note, with eager pupils jumping right on to flight simulators, learning how to plot a flight course, and so much more. Adventures at the camp are intended to provide participants with a realistic airplane pilot experience.
A heartily excited camper shares his experience: “I did not just get to feel but be like a real pilot up in the air when we were taking the Cessna for a spin. It was thrilling to see firsthand all the navigation tools and techniques used. I got to understand the ‘Six Pack’ concept, and all in all, it’s been an enlightening day,” says camper, Henry Blandford.
What is more riveting is that the grand finale of the camp involves students assisting in flying a real airplane with a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified instructor. Thus, placing them in an authentic flying environment that complements their theoretical understanding with valuable practical skills.
While this year’s Aviation Summer Camp slots are currently filled, hopeful participants are encouraged to put their names on a waiting list for next year’s iteration of the camp. It promises not only to teach students about the fascinating world of aviation but also to imbue in them a love for the sky and the world beyond it.
The initiative is a testament that learning opportunities can be made immersive, practical, and fun. After all, a whole generation of future pilots, aviation engineers, and air traffic controllers might just be gearing up for take-off!
