Auburn Tourism Invites Enthusiasts to Join Dynamic Auburn KY Rocks Hunt

AUBURN, Ky. – Since its inception in 2018, Auburn KY Rocks, a community rock hunt event, has been capturing the attention and imagination of many community members in Auburn. Spearheaded by Auburn Kentucky Tourism, the initiative that was started to cheer up people, promote fitness, and endorse downtown businesses, has now turned into a weekly event, engaging and delighting residents and tourists alike.

The vibrant event revolves around hand-painted rocks, hidden in different areas either in downtown Auburn or McCutchen Park. Each week, these rocks fetch smiles and excitement alike, with one of them carrying a special message declaring it a grand prize winner. The week’s business sponsor offers the grand prize, thus promoting local businesses and community interaction.

Community Rocks Showcasing Community Talent

Adding charm and authenticity to the whole event, the uniquely designed rocks used in the hunt are sourced from the community itself. Nurturing creativity and community participation, many of these rocks are designed and painted by students from Auburn Elementary.

“They’ll get together and make a big amount of them, and they’ll donate them to me and then throughout the year, I’ll hide them,” shared Rhonda Sullivan, Tourism Event Coordinator.

The Rock Snake: A New Addition to the Tradition

Ever since the commencement of a new tradition last year, the excitement around Auburn KY Rocks has only escalated. The rock snake, assembled using the rocks that weren’t winners, has gained popularity and attracted countless visitors. Located in front of the Auburn Fire Department, this snake art has become a landmark that many community members enjoy and visit to take pictures with and admire the creative designs of their fellow community members.

“A lot of times if the kids find a rock and it’s not a winner, they’ll go down there and add it to the snake and it’s gotten pretty long,” shared Sullivan.

The initiative has not only stimulated a wave of creativity across Auburn but also reinstated the spirit of community bonding and maintenance. It has also provided Auburn residents and visitors with a wholesome, fun-filled activity.
