In the charming city of Bowling Green, Kentucky, the Russell Sims Aquatics Center has announced a change in its schedule. With the school season recommencing, the park has decided to limit its operations to just the weekends for the rest of the 2024 season. The park has been a cherished neighborhood hub for watery fun and fitness for locals and tourists alike. The change of hours, however, will not impact the park’s devotion to the community.
The shift in schedule is attributed to the park’s staff, consisting mainly of high schoolers who offer lifeguard and other park services, returning to school. Cameron Levis, Recreation Division Manager for Bowling Green Parks and Recreation, explained that with school back in session, the park’s capability to operate on weekdays is a tad bit limited. He assured that they’d usually switch to weekend-only hours as study season kicks in.
There’s a little change, though, to this weekend-only template. The park allows its guests to take advantage of what it refers to as ‘Lap Swim’. Every Monday and Wednesday, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., visitors can enjoy lap swim sessions in one of the very few outdoor 50-meter lap pools around. Cameron Levis added that it is just $3 for the entire season and the park offers this unique healthy and fitness driven feature as a token to the community.
The Aquatics Center’s 2024 season saw a significant rise in participation. Approximately 15,000 people attended the park for its summer offerings. The park managed to host a variety of events and activities, and it was about more than just the sun and the pool. Bringing the park closer to the community in a lively and imaginative fashion was the ultimate aim.
The park had a roaring success with their ‘Journey to Neverland’ event, adding a sprinkle of Disney magic that the community embraced with delight. Already looking forward to planning more unique events for the next season, Levis suggested they’re game for more fun in 2025.
The Aquatics Center will function from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and from Noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays for the rest of the season. The park doors will close for this season on Labor Day, i.e., Monday, 2nd September. For more details, interested folks can visit bgky.org.
