Bowling Green Hosts Memorial Day Event

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – This morning, the local American Legion Post 23 participated in its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Roger Miller Hall on Dishman Lane. Notable local civic member, Air Force Veteran and Bowling Green Mayor, Todd Alcott, took center stage as the guest speaker during the poignant event.

Commemorating Fallen Heroes

“On Memorial Day, we specifically remember veterans who raised their hand and ultimately gave their life to service of our nation’s continued freedom, constitution, and our republic. Today we remember our veterans who gave it all and our symbol that continues to fly,” Mayor Alcott remarked.

The annual event brings together local veterans and their families to honor those brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. James Manley, Chief Financial Officer for American Legion Post 23, spoke of the honored dead saying, “All of the ones that you see that are here, we came home, they never had the opportunity to come home. They gave it all so all of us could be here today and that’s what we recognize.”

Honoring Contribution to the Community

However, it was not just the local veterans who showed up to pay tribute to the country’s fallen soldiers. Many civilians were also in attendance, recognizing the efforts of military personnel. “All those people that were in the Army, they were saving the community and our lives,” observed Jacob Crissman, a resident of Bowling Green.

While Memorial Day serves as a focal point to honor those who lost their lives, the American Legion and other local veteran service organizations show their respect and support to those who served and continue to serve every day through outreach and various charitable programs undertaken throughout the year.

Remembering the Sacrifices

Malcolm Cherry, Commander of American Legion Post 23, emphasized the importance of continued remembrance, “It’s important that we remember, remember, remember so that we will know the sacrifices that our American people have made to keep our country free and strong.”

In a show of communal support, lunch for those attending the ceremony was provided by the Hillvue Heights Church and served by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
