This year’s derby promises to be an exhilarating showdown of skill, speed, and spirit!

What’s Cooking in the Derby Scene?

During a recent chat on Sunrise Spotlight, a member from the local Kiwanis Club, a global organization dedicated to improving lives one child and one community at a time, shared insights about this year’s derby. Participants are invited to get in on the action whether they are seasoned experts or newcomers looking to dip their toes into the thrilling world of soap box racing. Mark Your Calendars for 2025!

If you’re looking to get involved, keep an eye out for upcoming dates for the 2025 All American Soap Box Derby. This venerable tradition, which has been running since 1934, brings together spirited competitors of all ages as they race down the streets in their gravity-powered vehicles. Over the years, the event has transformed from being exclusively male-centric, starting its journey in 1934, to now embracing racers of all genders since the initiation of female competitors in 1971.

Celebrating Champions and Community Spirit

Racing excitement was at an all-time high during the recent 78th annual event held in Derby Downs, Akron, Ohio, where Bowling Green’s very own Jamison Geisler came out on top. Jamison’s incredible work ethic paid off, and he snagged a national title in the Masters division after dedicating countless hours of practice. Jamison’s father, who once kickstarted a soap box derby organization in Michigan, commented on how much practice makes a difference; it’s about the racer more than the car!

The community nurtures not just competitiveness, but a bond among families. Jamison’s experience has been unique, and he’s made lifelong friends along the way. Many families rally together at events across the nation. Jamison credits his father for first introducing him to soap box racing when he was just six or seven years old!

More Wins for Kentucky!

Kentucky’s remarkable presence at the derby did not end there! Kelsey Settles from Owensboro proudly clinched the title in the Rally Masters Division. Her return to racing was inspired by family, especially her cousins, who encouraged her to jump back in after considering retirement in 2012. With a heartfelt racing car dedicated to her late aunt, who bravely fought cancer, Kelsey has shown that the spirit of the derby is about honoring family and tenacity.

Bowling Green also celebrated Tyler Peterson’s victory in the Rally Super Stock category and Lukas A. Ramey of Hanson, who triumphed in the Rally Stock division. The event gathered an impressive assembly of 418 racers aged 7 to 20, hailing from across the nation, and even as far as Japan and New Zealand, marking its impact and reach.

The Thrill of the Race!

The thrill of soap box racing lies in its simplicity. Drivers race gravity-operated cars, racing down hills or ramps as they compete against timers. Timing is crucial, as racers switch wheels and lanes between runs to determine their overall performance. This exhilarating sport not only fosters competition but also builds a supportive environment that feels like family.

As the community gears up for more soap box action in the upcoming year, the excitement and friendships formed through the derby will surely continue to grow. So, if you’re in Bowling Green or nearby, don’t miss out on either participating in or witnessing this fantastic local tradition! Join the fun, and let’s get those wheels rolling!
