Bowling Green to Host Fun-Filled Duck Drop Event!
Bowling Green, Ky. is gearing up for a unique and entertaining event that you won’t want to miss! This month, the city is thrilled to announce its very first Duck Drop set to take place at The Fringe at Stadium Park Plaza on November 25 at noon. Yes, you heard that right! Ducks will be dropping, and it’s all in the name of fun and community support!
A Nostalgic Twist on a Classic
The idea behind this quirky event comes from the popular WKRP in Cincinnati TV show, particularly the infamous turkey drop scene. According to Telia Butler, the Downtown Development Coordinator for Bowling Green, “We are doing a spoof of the original WKRP in Cincinnati TV shows Turkey drop from the late 70s and early 80s.” But don’t worry; instead of live turkeys being airlifted, Bowling Green is all about the rubber ducks—specifically the adorable, colorful ones that we’ve come to know and love from Duncan Hines Days.
How It Works
So how will it all go down? Picture this: a giant bucket full of rubber ducks will be lifted by a City Works truck and then dropped onto a chalk target on the ground. The excitement builds as everyone waits to see which duck lands closest to the target! “The duck that lands closest to the target is representative of a ticket,” Butler explains enthusiastically. The lucky ticket holder will win an incredible prize—a $100 gift card from Houchens and Crossroads IGA for their Thanksgiving meal, along with a delightful basket of downtown goodies for the holidays!
Get Your Ducks in a Row
For those excited to participate, there are just 200 rubber ducks up for grabs, priced at a mere $5 each. Don’t wait too long, as they are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each participant can purchase up to 10 ducks—so gather your friends and family for a fun-filled chance to win!
“The rubber ducks actually look like turkeys,” Butler adds with a grin, hinting at the playful spirit of the event. If you can’t make it in person, don’t sweat it! The duck drop will be broadcasted live on Facebook, allowing everyone to tune in and cheer from the comfort of their homes!
What’s in the Goodies Basket?
If you’re wondering what exactly could be in that basket of delightful downtown goodies, Butler has you covered! The basket contains a treasure trove of local swag, including items from shops downtown. She mentions, “We have some goodies from Candle Makers on the Square. We have a couple of gift cards to some other downtown retailers, and we have some downtown koozies, stickers, bottle openers, kind of the swag that you can find at some of our other downtown events.” Sounds exciting, right?
Supporting a Good Cause
The Duck Drop isn’t just for fun; it’s also a great way to support local initiatives. The event aims to raise funds for Duncan Hines Days events and various downtown programs through the brand new Better BGKY 501c3 nonprofit. As Butler explains, “They have always wanted to do something with that WKRP spoof. And they said, why don’t we drop the Duncan Hines ducks?” There’s more! The event will also spotlight the Stuff the Bus Foundation, promoting community cohesion and support for kids in need.
Food and Festivities
And let’s not forget about the food! There will be food trucks at the event to satisfy your cravings while you enjoy the festivities. It’s the perfect way to spend your Saturday—duck watching and good eating!
