BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Students at Briarwood Elementary School are getting hands-on experience in art through an exciting project that combines creativity and teamwork. A local artist has joined forces with the school, guiding students in making a unique piece that will soon hang in their building.

An Inspiring Collaboration

The project revolves around glass artist Dale Chihuly, known for his stunning and colorful chandeliers. Understanding how Chihuly works, the students decided to create their own version, but with a twist—using water bottles. This innovative idea not only encourages recycling but also showcases the students’ creativity.

Kim Soule, an artist associated with Arts for All Kentucky, shared insight into how the project is coming together. “It’s assembled using… you can see chicken wire in there and hula hoops. We’ve made a large chandelier that will be an installation… and in this school, they’re going to hang it in the bell tower, which is going to have a presence, and right when you walk into the school, all the students will say, ‘Oh, I helped make that,’” she explained.

Celebrating the Artistic Process

This project is a collaborative effort with Briarwood’s art teacher, Susan McCloud, who expressed her enthusiasm for the program. “It just gives… it allows us to expand our horizons, and anytime you can have somebody that’s an expert, such as Miss Soule, to come in and share that with our students, it just enlightens and brightens everybody’s day,” McCloud stated.

As part of the project, students are actively involved in coloring their water bottles, which will ultimately become part of the chandelier. A group of kindergartners was spotted happily engaged in this creative task, showcasing their excitement to contribute to something that will be a permanent fixture in their school environment.

A Lasting Impact

The installation will not only beautify the school but also serve as a source of pride for the students. It’s a reminder of their hard work and collaboration, encouraging them to think about art and teamwork in a broader sense.

The chandelier is expected to be prominently displayed in the bell tower of the school, making it visible to everyone who enters. This will create a vibrant atmosphere and remind students that they helped create a special piece of art that represents their creativity and teamwork.

Conclusion

This unique art project at Briarwood Elementary represents the connection between local artists and students, showing how art can be a meaningful part of education. Through engaging in hands-on creativity, students not only learn about the artistic process but also how to work together to achieve a common goal. The future unveiling of their chandelier is sure to ignite a sense of accomplishment among the young artists, leaving a lasting impact on their educational experience.
