Bowling Green Offers Eco-Friendly Pumpkin Disposal Ahead of Halloween

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As Halloween approaches, many families find themselves contemplating what to do with their pumpkins once the festivities are over. A local initiative is looking to make this decision a lot easier while also benefitting the environment. Compost Bowling Green is stepping in to help residents responsibly dispose of their pumpkins.

Community Effort from November 2 to November 9

For the third consecutive year, Compost Bowling Green will set up a pumpkin disposal service at the Community Farmers Market located on Nashville Road. This special event will run for a full week, from November 2 through November 9. The organization encourages locals to drop off their unwanted pumpkins, allowing them to be transformed into useful compost rather than ending up in a landfill.

Environmental Benefits of Composting

Charlie O’Connell, the owner of Compost Bowling Green, explained the environmental importance of composting organic waste. “Any organic matter in the landfill, it’s going to decompose and produce greenhouse gases,” he said. Instead of adding to this issue, O’Connell and his team aim to collect these pumpkins, integrate them into their compost pile, and create a soil amendment that can benefit gardens in Bowling Green and Warren County.

Helping the Community with Food Donations

In addition to composting, the organization plans to also categorize some of the better quality pumpkins. O’Connell expressed a desire to partner with local charities such as Glean Kentucky and nearby farms to ensure that edible pumpkins can hopefully help feed people in need. This dual approach combines waste management with community support, paving the way for a more sustainable and caring local environment.

What to Expect at the Farmers Market

Attendees at the Community Farmers Market can expect a friendly and efficient setup, making it easy to drop off pumpkins. This effort not only aids in waste management but promotes a sense of community as people come together for a common cause. Residents are encouraged to bring their pumpkins after Halloween when they might typically find themselves tossing the decaying gourds.

A Community of Environmental Consciousness

The push for composting pumpkins aligns with the broader awareness of environmental issues in today’s society. Compost Bowling Green hopes to inspire residents to think critically about waste disposal and its long-term effects on the environment. By choosing composting over simply discarding, the community can have a profound impact on the local ecosystem.

The Call to Action

Residents of Bowling Green are encouraged to participate in this initiative, reminding family, friends, and neighbors to keep their pumpkins out of the landfill this holiday season. Composting not only benefits the environment but also allows people to give back to their community in a meaningful way. The service will run for just one week, so it’s important to plan ahead and make sure those pumpkins are brought to the market.

As Halloween approaches, consider how your choices can reflect a commitment to sustainability and community welfare. Take advantage of this eco-friendly opportunity, and help turn your post-Halloween waste into valuable compost!
