Bowling Green Welcomes Fall with Applefest at Jackson’s Orchard
As the last summer holiday, Labor Day, comes to a close, residents and visitors in Bowling Green are gearing up for the arrival of fall. One of the beloved traditions signaling the start of the season is the annual Applefest at Jackson’s Orchard. This event marks the launch of autumn festivities, and families in the area are eager to participate.
The Fruits of September
Jackson’s Orchard, a local favorite, is home to anywhere from 16 to 18 different varieties of apples. According to the orchard’s co-owner, Jonathan Price, while some apple varieties have already been harvested, many are just beginning to be picked, continuing through September and into October. “A few of those have already been picked and they’re finished,” said Price. “The vast majority of them are just starting and will continue to pick new varieties coming through September and into October.”
Price also explained that getting ready for fall isn’t something that starts in early September. Spring preparation is just as important: “April and in the first half of May were an interesting weather time; rain, wind, we had a hailstorm mid-May. We’ve since tried to work through that. It’s been a little different than in years past, but we’re moving forward and looking forward to a good fall now,” he shared. Despite some challenges, especially caused by a hailstorm that left blemishes on certain crops, the orchard is set for a season full of fun.
Fun Activities for All
Visitors can look forward to more than just apple picking during Applefest. Jackson’s Orchard offers a variety of activities for families, which Price describes as an opportunity to connect with the source of their food. “It’s always enjoyable to see families come out, be on the farm, hopefully connect a little bit with where some of their food comes from,” he stated. Activities include picking apples at half price compared to store-bought options, playing on the playground, enjoying a sweet caramel apple, and even feeding goats.
For those who are looking for a more hands-on experience, Jackson’s Orchard allows guests to gather apples, which are collected in bins, brought in for washing, and later processed into apple cider. This “full circle” approach provides visitors with an understanding of the journey from tree to table.
Upcoming Events
Applefest is just the beginning of what Jackson’s Orchard has to offer this fall. Mark your calendars for Pumpkinfest, which will kick off on September 28th, and continue the celebrations until the end of October. Each weekend will be filled with exciting events and activities, drawing families from Bowling Green and beyond.
A Great Family Destination
As families pack their bags for a fun day at the orchard, Jackson’s Orchard stands as a key part of fall traditions in Bowling Green. The mix of seasonal activities combined with the opportunity to learn about where their food comes from is a valuable experience for everyone.
