New Welcome Sign Project for Warren County Underway

Colorful community landmark creation

Bowling Green, Ky. – New Welcome Sign Project for Warren County

A new project on I-165 is underway, aiming to create a warm welcome for visitors arriving in Bowling Green and Warren County. Currently, the area is just a plot of dirt, but plans are in motion to transform it into a prominent welcome sign.

According to Johnny Webb, chairman of Operation PRIDE, the project will feature two stone walls topped with big red letters saying “Bowling Green.” Below that, there will be “Warren County” and “Home of Western Kentucky University” displayed. Adding to the visual appeal, a massive 130-foot flagpole will fly a 30 by 60-foot American flag, with additional flagpoles dedicated to the various military branches positioned behind it.

Community Support and Land Donation

The land where the new sign will be located was generously donated by its owner, Malcolm Cherry. Cherry recounted how the idea for the welcome sign came about during a flag-raising ceremony at the Corvette Museum when Webb reached out to him.

“Johnny approached me and asked if I knew who owned the piece of property on the corner,” Cherry explained. He was pleased to find out that he owned it and decided to donate the land for this important community project, expressing his happiness at being part of it.

A Gateway for Visitors

Once finished, the welcome sign will resemble existing signs seen at I-65 exits 20, 26, and 30. Webb emphasized the importance of making visitors feel welcomed upon their arrival. “People coming in to Bowling Green from western Kentucky, southern Illinois, and southern Indiana… this is how they would come in to Bowling Green,” he said, adding that the area had been lacking a proper entrance for travelers.

The project is anticipated to wrap up in about six weeks. The completion of the welcome sign aims to establish a recognizable gateway to Bowling Green, enhancing the community’s appeal and making a strong impression on newcomers.

Conclusion

This initiative reflects the collaborative spirit of the community, showcasing a commitment to hospitality. With support from local leaders and community members like Cherry, the new sign is set to enhance the experience for everyone entering Warren County. As Bowling Green prepares to welcome its visitors, anticipation continues to build for a project that symbolizes the pride and unity of the town.
