New Exhibit Opens at Aviation Heritage Park to Honor Thunderbirds Air Force Team

Bowling Green, KY – The Aviation Heritage Park became the home of a grand new exhibit this past weekend, paying homage to the Thunderbirds, the United States Air Force’s demonstration team, specifically the 1977-78 squad. Of particular note, two crucial members of this illustrious team hail from the city of Bowling Green.

Celebrations Take Flight

Adding festivity to the heartening occasion, one of the Thunderbirds from Bowling Green, Matt Byrd, conducted a celebratory flyover of the city. His signature maneuvers enthralled the crowds gathered at the opening, creating a memorable spectacle and highlighting the significance of the event.

Community Commitment

Brigadier General Dan Cherry, another member of the distinguished Thunderbirds team, expressed his love for the city and its people. While he didn’t spend much of his upbringing in Bowling Green, the call to return grew stronger after his retirement from service. Cherry said, “The opportunity to return was a blessing. I’ve found enjoyment in retirement and contributing to initiatives like this. It’s a rewarding way to give back to the city. The overwhelming support we’ve received is a testament to the lasting tradition of giving back.”

The Thunderbirds exhibit is now open for public viewing at the Aviation Heritage Park. It offers a rich narrative of the historic team and their contribution towards the US Air Force’s stellar reputation.
