Western Kentucky University Music Department hosts ‘Sing, My Child’
A beautiful evening of music at the Spring Choir Concert
“Sing, My Child” – a captivating choir concert by the Western Kentucky University (WKU) Music Department – was recently held, featuring performances by the Treble Chorus, the University Singers, and the Chorale in Bowling Green. It was the choir program’s first Friday evening performance, a change from their usual Sunday concerts, which brought in an expanded audience.
Hanna Knox, a freshman majoring in music education and a member of the University Singers, voiced her excitement for the Friday concert in the hope of attracting more attendees. “Since the concert is on a Friday we hope more can come out and enjoy the music,” Knox said.
Six of the pieces performed during the concert were in Latin, which highlighted a unique feature of the concert. Ensuring an immersive and comprehensive experience for the audience, the English translations for these Latin songs were displayed on the screen – a move not commonly taken during the WKU choir concerts.
A Place for All
The range of choirs, from the Chorale to the University Singers, are open to all majors with a modest audition, offering everyone a chance to join in on the musical experience. Senior psychology major, Jay Hightower shared her journey from participating in the University Singers to becoming a member of the Chorale.
“It’s great to have a place where I don’t have to be a music major but I can still sing the music I enjoy,” said Hightower, highlighting the inclusivity of the choir group. She also voiced her admiration for the choir community at WKU, stating, “Nothing I have seen compares to choir at WKU.”
Notable Performances and Director Acknowledgement
WKU’s Treble Chorus was conducted by Graduate Assistant, William Mason-Walker. Apart from him, Dr. Paul Hondorp, director of choral activities led the WKU Chorale in a mesmerizing performance. Unique gestures, passionate conducting, and an overall immersed engagement marked the pivotal roles they played in the successful execution of the concert.
At the end of the concert, the audience erupted into a round of applause to acknowledge the brilliant performances and the tireless efforts of all the choir members, as well as the gratitude towards the conductors and directors.

The atmosphere of the concert was buzzing with excitement, quality music, and a deep appreciation for the talented participants. “Sing, My Child” epitomizes the rich tradition of excellence fostered by the WKU Music Department, an influential part of the vibrant artistic community. The department plays a significant role in shaping well-rounded artists and continuing the representation of the strong artistic community at Bowling Green.
