With race day fast approaching, the soap box derby racers of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and their sponsors prepare themselves for this much-anticipated annual event. Nearly 70 racers – both young and experienced – will pit their self-constructed race cars against each other, exhibiting unfettered enthusiasm and dedication.
The Soap Box Derby, generating excitement amongst the community, is expected to commence this Friday and will extend to the following day, allowing for two days of thrilling, downhill racing action.
In aid of the upcoming Soap Box Derby, the Kiwanis Club of Bowling Green organized their customary sponsor luncheon and oil can race. This event is an opportunity for sponsors to familiarize themselves with the racers they are supporting and even sample the thrill of soap box racing.
Long-standing member of the Kiwanis Club and Warren County magistrate, states, “We invite anybody wants to come down in these adult size cars so that they can see the thrill of the hills themselves. Until you’re in a car until you going down, you don’t really understand the joy the thrill that there is to do it.” This exhilaration encapsulates the essence of Soap Box Derby, a tradition going back over 85 years.
The Soap Box Derby is an open, free event that invites anyone interested in experiencing the exhilaration of the races and the unique, carefully built race cars. The festival-like atmosphere will commence this Friday at 5 p.m., resuming again the following morning at 7a.m. The two-day event is anticipated to be a flurry of action, featuring soap box cars whizzing downhill at thrilling speeds.

Participants known as ‘Derby Racers’ build their gravity-powered cars from scratch using materials provided in a kit.
